Indian cyber security emerging!
Internet is really a part of routine life of almost everyone [except our countrymen below poverty line because the shitty (yes) Government]. India being second largest population of the world, with over 1.2 Billion folks around, its a gold mine for a lot of IT Companies. Just look around, you’d notice that the companies making smallest products like “tooth paste” are worth millions. Why? Because despite of their small margin in the product, they have hundreds of thousands people buying it.
Same goes for Internet Piracy. In my knowledge, I can put India in top the list of “Top 10 countries involved in piracy”. It may be of
softwares, application, music and movies. According to statistics, every second Indian teenager downloads stuffs regularly. Most of them do not even know that its actually illegal. This an article that talks about how things are changing in India [slowly but steadily].
First instance, Me talking to my friend who works for an ISP. 3 days ago, I met with one of my old buddies, who happens to be pretty good with computer networking. He works with an ISP [Internet Service Provider]. It is a pretty famous network around the country, so I wouldn’t want to name them here. I got lot of personal stuffs going on these days, so not looking forward for a new problem . So, I was talking to him about usage of Internet technologies by Terrorists. We all know that sophisticated terrorists hacks into other’s networks for e-mail communication. We were talking about what are ISPs doing to prevent it. Then I asked him that most of the ISP’s use DHCP servers, so their client’s IPs are frequently right? And his answer was “NO!, IPs are not changed as they used to before. They are changed only when there is some internal problem with our system. Even though the connection is running through DHCP server, still they would have the same IP”. That was a new thing for me, because I always thought DHCP servers changed IPs frequently. So my next question was, how about if I want to get my IP changed for any reason? Surprisingly, if you want to get your IP changed, theres an entire new procedure. I am just lising main steps here.
1. You get an authorized letter about “why do you want your IP to be changed and the reason”.
2. Submit if to your ISP.
3. ISP guys will then forward it to the Police Department.
4. Police Department will make sure that your IP has not been utilized in any illegal activities.
5. As you might know, our mighty cyber cell [dept for internet] doesn’t know sh*t [really]. So it takes days, sometimes months for them to clear.
6. They send a letter to ISP that you’re clean.
7. ISP issues a new IP to your line, which takes 24 hours to take effect.
This whole damn process, takes anywhere between 4 to 12 weeks . Anyway, the point here is, even though we might be the one of the leading countries in the intelligent process of piracy, there are steps being taken to prevent it. Ofcourse, they aren’t full fledged, but still they are being followed when necessary.
Another interesting instance was, file sharing sites being blocked in India. Apparently, Reliance Big Pictures [A famous company of Bollywood] sent cease and desists notice to file sharing sites for allowing users to download their latest movie “Singham”. Just to stay in the news, a few ISP’s kinda over reacted and blocked the entire sites instead of particular links. Here are the list of sites that are blocked.
RapidShare.com
Mediafire.com
MegaUpload.com
Hotfile.com
SendSpace.com
Fileserve.com
MegaVideo.com
VideoBB.com
Novamov.com
Movshare.net
Filesonic.com
Putlocker.com
Depositfiles.com
With that being said, its kinda good to see things happening. Ofcourse, that sentence of mine may piss off some regular downloaders who can’t afford to buy the music or movie. Before you start cursing me or Reliance Big Pictures, think about people investing millions to get the movie made. There are lot more events that made me think that our Government is actually doing a few things to prevent illegal online stuffs.
Just for your info, IT Act formed in 2000, which used to take care of CyberCrime as well was totally old-fashioned as Hacking wasn’t a part of serious offenses back then. Thanks to our Government [for atleast doing this], this act was changed recently in 2008. Now, it covers following offenses.
* Cyber Terrorism
* Wi-Fi Hacking
* Sending / Viewing child pornography
* Video Voyeurism
* Identity Theft
* Spam.
These are the generalized categories. For example, for a complaint of facebook fake profile and abuse, it will fall under “Identity Theft”. Let’s wait for some next big news
